I loved this! HUGS to you and your fabulous niece. πŸ’–πŸ» and teddy hugs too!

  2. Fantastic – I wish I had been there to give and receive a hug. I’ll just have to make do with a virtual one for you, David. When you see her, please give Joanne a hug from me!

    • I’ll do that with pleasure Jan but should we ever meet I shall expect a real one and will owe you one from Joanne too because you couldn’t get there.
      Hope things are going well.

  8. I think thats incredibly sweet David what a wonderful idea and Joanne is a lovely person.

  9. David — I shared the article on FB. This was great! — Linda

  10. That’s so awesome, David. Give that girl a big hug from the U.S., or at least from me. HUGS to you, too, my friend.

  11. Hugs cost nothing and give much pleasure. Lots of people have no-one to hug. Bravo to your niece. Lots of people smiled that day. ❀ ❀ ❀
    Hugs to her. 🐻 🐻

  12. This is a marvelous story, David. You’ve obviously been a great influence on Joanne. Good for her for stepping up and giving hugs. Yay! Mega hugs to you both.
    And i hope you’re feeling better. ❀

    • Wish I could take credit for influencing her Teagan but this is just her natural kindness. It was all her and a success too.
I’ll pass your hugs on, thanks so much.

  13. Delightful! Like uncle, like niece. I hope your break is relaxing and that you are enjoying your fish-free life. Poor El Fish died. My daughter got him a bigger tank, and I guess she didn’t condition the water properly, so she killed him with kindness. I was genuinely sorry; he was a nice little guy.

  14. Reblogged this on Wild and Woolly Wordsmithing and commented:
This definitely gets my vote for most awesome event of the year! What an wonderful person. We need more people like her in the universe!

  15. Great idea. I’d love to try that one day.

  16. Hugs A-Hoy! What a wonderful, huggable family you are! The world needs more Joannes and Davids. That’s for sure xxxxxxxx

Fabulous! Huge hugs to you both. There are days when a hug from a stranger would fix a lot. We should all feel inspired and spread the love. xx

    • Hi Carol, I think you’re right. Next time you’re on stage get the audience to give it a go with someone next to them and put them in a great mood at the start of the show. You can be a Buthidar Roving Ambassador.

  18. Great work, Joanne! xxx Huge Hugs xxx all round!

  19. Such a lovely thing to do. After the siege in Sydney in December there was a group of people who offered free counselling and free hugs to those of us who needed the comfort. I accepted a hug from a lovely young woman and the feeling will long stay with me. With so much nastiness in the world, these kinds of things go a long way to balance the scales in favour of love (and hugs, of course!). xxx

    • The siege was such a major thing that people needed to see there were people who cared. The thing is, we never know when someone has had their own personal ‘siege’ and is in need of reassurance.. We can’t always see those who need a hug or even those who’d be willing to share one. If just ten people she hugged found someone else to hug it can go a long way.

  20. Wonderful!!! Massive Hugs: A Family Traditon could be your next book title πŸ˜€ Oh, and before I forget to tell you again, I moved your author page to my second blog too. Hugs to you and your lovely family, David.

  21. This really made me smile! Everyone needs a hug sometimes πŸ˜‰

    • Quite right Sarah. So now you can make someone else smile with a hug and ask them to pass it on. Maybe Edinburgh will be smiling by tomorrow night.

  22. We all need more hugs and the emotional warmth they give us so a thousand congratulations to your niece for her goodness of heart and warm initiative.

    • Thank you Peter. A hug can give us so much. My brother’s going to get a shock when he arrives as I haven’t hugged anyone today. I should be ashamed to be a Buthidar.
I’ll pass your message on to her.

  23. Being awesome obviously runs in the family!
Huge hugs as always and an extra birthday hug to your niece xxxxxx

  24. I love the fact that those hugs were passed on. Truly a little kindness goes a long way. πŸ™‚

    • With such a little effort they can go so much further.
Hug 2 people and ask them to hug 2 people each and so on. Soon a town is smiling, then a city. Someone will have really needed that hug at just the time they got it.

  25. Your daughter seems like such a wonderful person. I like the way she seemed very respectful of people, offering–not pushing–hugs to those who wanted them. I love her thought that maybe someone was in special need of a hug that day, and so she was offering it. Happy Belated Birthday to her, and hugs to both of you!

    • That’s a huge compliment to me Merrill. My daughter is wonderful but this awesome young lady is my niece. I can guarantee that someone who received a hug was really in need of one just then. We can’t see other people’s problems but often we can make them feel better with a hug.We just need to keep them spreading. We hug 2 and ask them to hug 2 each. Not too long before the world is smiling.

  26. Great news coverage! Hugs definitely in the DNA! Hugs! β™₯

  27. I remember you told us about this and it’s great they featured it in the news. About time they had something good to talk about too. The world would be a better place if more people were like you and your niece David. Big hugs all around!

  28. What a lovely article, and a lovely niece. I’m so pleased the hugs were paid forward πŸ™‚

    • Me Too. It must have been great to stand there and see the ripples spread on the pond as those she’d hugged, then hugged others.
I’m sure someones day must have been made by such a simple action.
She’s a very special person as is her sister who went to support her.

  29. I’d say it’s a strong family trait, David!
Thanks for the link, and please wish her a belated birthday wish from me. This was exceptional and quite wonderful.

    • Thanks so much Marylin. I will pass your wishes on and your wonderful comment. I do agree with you it was an exceptional thing to do, maybe even life changing for some but certainly for Joanne.

That is so cool! What a beautiful person she must be. Hugs to you as well my friend and thanks for sharing! πŸ™‚

  31. Simply brilliant! ‘Hugs!’ πŸ™‚

  32. Hi David,
What a wonderful thing to do! Amazing and such a happy thing. Great confidence to share this with people. Good news, I love it!
    Sending the hugs your way,

  33. lovely, lovely, lovely… only just caught up with the end of the story…wish she was here !!!!

    • Perhaps we could Crowdfund her for an International Hugging Tour. Some years ago when I first started my Buthidar movement I had people in various Countries who headed their groups there and I wanted to start a Hugathon to set people realising just how beneficial Hugs are. When I moved the group from Facebook many people didn’t think it would work on a blog or that other social groups would survive. I’d like to build the blog membership up now and try again. Maybe people like Jo could get some interest from student groups now.
