The need for editing was driven home to me today by one letter. I had just written, I carried on my way to get dressed……… or so I thought. On re-reading it I’d written, I carried on my way to get dresses. That changed the sense of the story altogether and probably gave the reader the wrong sense of me and my wardrobe at the same time. The problem was that autocorrect doesn’t flag dresses up as it’s a real word and so the error is easy to miss.
Fellow writers. Find yourself a good editor before your reputation goes downhill as quickly as mine could have.
Playday today was brought to you by the letter S.
Reblogged this on Smorgasbord – Variety is the spice of life and commented:
Love it David… and I think you would look lovely in pearls too… I know some great frock shops if you need them… hugs XX
I don’t judge. Dresses, dressed or even undressed – I am accepting of all.

That’s very open minded of you.I’ll bear you in mind as advisor next time I’m invited to an orgy. You’ll know if I’ve got it right.

Please do. Orgies can be such a minefield. So important to get it right.

David, considering you buy clothes for others, besides yourself, probably no one would pay attention to you buying dresses. They would just think the dresses were to be a gift for someone. 😀
You’re quite right Suzanne though they’d think I was buying them for a tall, very ‘chunky’ woman.

LOL. Love your sense of humor, David. Mega hugs.
The girls are all getting the best lines in David 👍😃😄😈
Don’t they always?
Hugs Chris.
Indeed 😱🙊🙈😈 Hugs
So easily done but it’s made me laugh which is all good! xxHugsxx
My job is done.

Words of wisdom from my friend!!!
Thank-you!!!!
Almost a very red face.

Oh David, that’s so funny.
I know exactly what you mean and excellent advice. 🙂
So what kind of manpurse goes with those dresses? 😉
Oh something glitzy I suppose since the dresses are just soooo plain.

As an editor myself, I often cringe at self-published books. There is no shame in getting your work edited/proofed – much better to have one editor see your typos than the whole world!
Anyway, if you want dresses, don’t let us stand in your way, David!

Luckily I’ve no room left in my wardrobes. The dresses will have to wait.

It’s too late now David, the damage is done. I’ll follow your advice and find a good editor.
Surely you’ve not gone for the dresses too Guy. The competition is too much.

Thanks so much Judith.

That started my day with a smile David! Glad you caught it before your reputation lay in tatters on the dressing room floor 🙂 xoxo
I’m glad my ‘dis-dress’ gave you a smile Pauline. But I hope my reputation remains com-pleat.

First skinny jeans, now dresses–what a trendsetter you are!
(But I agree that proofreading and editing are very important.)
Hugs!
There goes my reputation again Merril, I keep saying it’s not a dress it’s my kilt.

Gives a whole new meaning to “There’s many a slip twixt dress and drawers” as Terry Pratchett’s Nanny Ogg would say 🙂
Drawers, ah yes, those things you slide in and out of cabinets. Nanny Ogg has many good sayings though not many of them are right.

Such an important lesson, David. I had a little giggle over this but I’m glad you spotted it 😀
Oh no,it wasn’t spotted , it was plain. Damn, I didn’t mean to say that.
I’m glad you got a little giggle Dianne.

So funny. I would have been a bit surprised to read that, but not overly concerned. It is amazing the difference even a tiny letter can make to things. Have a great day. xxx
Am I so pleased for the young generation these days: the bigwigs of education are talking about bringing back Spelling as subject into school curriculum – it’s been out of there for decades and “we old ones who had it” can spot the stupidity of autocorrect quite easily if we put our mind to it 😀
The idea of having spelling back in schools is great as what people learn they often carry for life. The only problem is, I carried the spelling from my day, but now it meets new spellings of the same thing, great = gr8 and I wonder if that’s what children will be taught. The language I know will survive, but I’m sure many of the spellings have already changed. I also know that many words have been mothballed which children will never get the chance to use,
I’m afraid many children of the age of text will lose out on the education my generation had.

I think, thank God, they mean the good old-fashioned pure English spelling, none of this new smart stuff – that can come as one goes, David. Hugs back
And yet it’s so CUTE, David.
Trust me, even if you actually posed in your mistake–a Vera Wang creation in aqua might be charming–I would still look forward to receiving (and giving you) massive hugs! 🙂
Thanks so much Marylin. I’m not sure posing in my mistake would benefit thee world unless Vera Wang specialises in maxi dresses. No-one wants these legs in public view. And aqua might be a mistake with my colouring. One thing that won’t change is my readiness to give and receive your hugs also. I’m ready to offer Hugs to you at anytime.

I’m so glad you got a laugh Nimi.

If I had a pound for little ‘pubic’ that crept into my mails when writing about public authorities or public law… I still wonder how many I missed. Thanks for the salutary reminder, Dave
Oh, that one’s a doozy worthy of keeping in I think. It’s easy to be blindsided too. Nearby we have a village called Saltney bur whenever I have occasion to write it I just know it will say Slatney. My typing speed between the two letters must be off. That’s one I know will always have to be corrected but so many are easy to miss.
Makes you very popular with the Tourist board, I’ll be bound!
-giggles- What a pity, I’m sure you’d look very fetching in a dress :p
Who is it I’ve got to fetch?
xxx Hugs xxx
Um… never mind. 🙂
Glad to see that you’re up and running again! 🙂
I’m pleased to be back again Joe. I felt like a pariah locked out of the fold. I knew things would be happening but hated not knowing what.
David, if your legs look good in a pair of skinny jeans, you would have no problem getting away with a few dresses! Huge hugs to you! 😄
It can be quite hilarious to see the change in meaning that just one letter can cause 🙂

I really have to be more careful. So many other words can be changed the same way.

Well, they say clothes make the man. Or woman. Or both. Sometimes, it’s hard to tell the difference through a slip of the tongue. It’s so easy to do.
If anyone needs an editor, I’m available.
I agree sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference Patricia, I generally look for a beard.
With your qualifications I’m sure there will be plenty of takers for the editing skills.
